Welcome to the Stranded Gas Initiative

The Stranded Gas Initiative is dedicated to advancing the capture and productive use of flared, vented, and stranded natural gas as part of our broader energy initiatives. We are a collaborative effort transforming a persistent challenge in Canada's energy sector into a sustainable opportunity. Flared and stranded gas — unwanted natural gas that is burned off, vented, or left untapped — occurs not only at remote production sites due to limited infrastructure, high costs, or geographic barriers but also at various facilities, including oil and gas processing plants, refineries, and other operations along the hydrocarbon supply chain. From Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia oil fields to remote northern regions like the Mackenzie Delta, this gas represents significant wasted potential that can be responsibly captured and converted into clean, on-site power, high-performance computing energy, fuels, or other valuable products.

At the Stranded Gas Initiative, we serve as the central hub for the latest industry news, project updates, and educational resources on sustainable gas solutions. We provide clear, accessible information on innovative technologies for gas capture and utilization, on-site power generation, gas-to-compute applications, emissions reduction strategies, economic benefits, and the generation of high-quality carbon credits. Our mission is to promote sustainable gas utilization across all flaring locations — remote wells, processing facilities, refineries, and beyond — while championing environmental stewardship. We help producers, innovators, communities, policymakers, and stakeholders understand and implement practical solutions that minimize routine flaring and venting, unlock value from these resources, and support Canada's climate commitments.

Our primary goal is to eliminate routine flaring and venting wherever feasible, directly supporting Canada's ambitious methane reduction targets (75% below 2014 levels by 2035) and contributing to national and global climate objectives. By enabling low-emission applications such as flare-to-power, gas-to-compute, and other utilization technologies at diverse sites — including refineries and processing facilities — we aim to achieve near-zero emissions from targeted operations, generate verifiable high-integrity carbon credits, and deliver measurable environmental improvements. At the same time, we prioritize creating jobs, supporting Indigenous and remote communities, reducing diesel dependency in off-grid areas, and enhancing overall energy resilience.

We envision a future where flared and stranded gas is no longer wasted but actively powers innovation — fueling high-performance computing and AI workloads, providing reliable low-cost energy to industrial sites and remote locations, and driving the growth of distributed, lower-emission power systems. As global demand for cost-effective, sustainable energy surges to support data centers, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies, Canada is uniquely positioned to lead in responsible resource utilization across all flaring scenarios, attract clean tech investment, and set a strong example in the energy transition.

Explore the site to stay informed, dive deeper into technologies and economics, discover partnership opportunities, and connect with the growing network.

We look forward to working together to turn Canada's flared and stranded gas challenge — from remote wells to refineries and beyond — into a national advantage.
